Nias Island lies about 125 kms of west Sumatera Island on Indian Ocean. It is part of North Sumatera, located 85 miles from the mainland Sibolga, Central Tapanuli and the largest Island in a chain paralleling the west coast of Sumatera. Nias Island has a topografy much like western Sumatera but without volcanoes. The water surround the Island is great for sea activites, such as surfing and diving. Nias island offers you a bunch of crazy and the most challenging waves. There are at least 14 beaches with beautiful white sand around the Island. Some beaches has the big waves which are the perfect spot for surfing. You can also enjoy Idanogawo hot water, go to lake, rock and reef fish community of the archipelago islands.

The Sorake Bay on the Island is the ultimate surfing destination, because it is an internationally renowned surfing spot and has become one of the most exotic wave-searching destinations. Offering some of the best waves in the world, Nias Island have held the international surfing competitions every year since 1993, even the World Championship Surfing Competition. The bay is located of Teluk Dalam on the Southern of Nias Island. You can surf huge waves 10 -15 ft faces, and this is why the Sorake break is considered one of the 10 best waves of the world. The first surfer who had come and surf this bay called it "a paradise on the earth". There is a perfect beginner spot in Nias Island called Lagundry Bay with a wonderful scenery. It is an ideal place to learn surfing in full security. Boards can be rented from the beach surf resorts, and reliable surf trainers are ready to help you.

Nias is also best-known for its diversity of festivals and celebrations. The most well-known events are War Dances regularly performed for the tourists. Hombo Batu or what it is called in english "Stone-Jumping" is one of the popular activites which still well preserved for centuries, and an ancient ritual of Nias Island, with young man leaping over 2 meter tall stone walls with only a stepping stone as aid. In the past, There were spikes and sharp pointed bamboo on the top of the stone board. The Niassian people have an interesting of animism and ancentor worship. There are still old stone carvings "Rumah adat" as well as monolithic free standing stones around the central part of Nias Island, some of them are over 3000 years old, the oldest in Indonesia.

Some historians and archaelogists have made the local culture as one of the few remaining Megalithic cultures that still exist today. Nias has many great vacation places to visit, and for those who wish to feel different experience and adventure of travelling.


Off the coast of Nias lie 2 other islands, Bawa Island and Aru Island. Bawa Island is also excellent for surfing and can be accessed via the public ferry, and Aru Island has some great left hand reef breaks.You can fly or catch a ferry to get to Nias Island. Ferries leave from Sibolga and the journey takes 8 to 13 hours depending on the weather, but it takes only 50 minutes from Medan to Nias Island.
