Gunung Leuser National Park is in northern Sumatera, straddling border of the province of Aceh and North Sumatera. It covers nearly 950,000 hectares, and is the world's most important biologically diverse conservation areas. It is considered as a complete ecosystem laboratory because of the range forest and species types make it as one of the World Heritage Site, Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatera. Gunung Leuser National Park had been declared as a Biosphere Reserve under cooperation program between Indonesia and Malaysia, even the park was designated as a "Sister" to Taman Negara in Malaysia.

Gunung Leuser National Park is a collection of various nature reserves and forests such as Nature Reserve Kappi, Nature Reserve Gunung Leuser, Nature Reserve Kluet, Sikundur Langkat Wildlife Reserve, Ketambe Research Station, Dolok Sembilin and Singkil Barat. This region is also a home of the wildlife, the Leuser ecosystem lists over 382 species of birds, 103 species of reptiles, 105 species of mammals and 25 species of amphibians. Macaques, gibbons, Thomas leaf monkey are just a few of the thousands of species found in the unique ecosystem. This region has an enermous wealth of plant species that contains over 3500 different plant species, and you can find 130 different tree species within one hectare. 45% of all recorded plan species in the West Indo-Malayan region are found in this area, including the spectacular Rafflesia Arnoldi and Amorphophallus titanum (Titan Arum), the biggest and the highest flower in the world.

Gunung Leuser can be reached by make a trip to Medan. You can choose either head to Bukit Lawang or from Medan to Kutacane if you want to go hiking Hunung Leuser. In Bukit Lawang you can enter the park through the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. If you prefer the convenience of an air-conditioned, a private car can be arranged for Polonia Airport in Medan.
Note: It requires a PHPA permit, to go to the Gunung Leuser National Park. Get a permit from the PHPA offices in Medan, Tanah Merah (2 km north of Kutacane). Provide two copies of passport or two passport photos and copy of visum stamp.
