Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park spans over 3 different provinces of Sumatera, they are Lampung, Bengkulu, and South Sumatera. Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, categorized as a Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatera. The main objective of Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is to save the existence of Sumatera's tropical rainforests along with all their biodiversity (fauna and flora).

Starting as the Wildlife Sanctuary in 1935, then it became a National Park in 1982, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park covered a total area of 356,800 hectares. The name of Bukit Barisan means "row of hills", the procession of mountains or more precisely as mountain chain with many peaks. The Bukit Barusan consists primarily of forested volcanoes, the highest peak of this area is Mount Kerinci at over 3800 meters.Mount Kerinci is rich in diversity. There are several large rivers and many streams, Lakes such as Lake Toba, Kelimutu Crater Lake, Lake Gunung Tujuh, hot springs, stunning waterfalls, complex cave systems and smoke-belching fumeroles.

The park is highlighted as a priority area for many endangeres species, including Sumateran Rhino Conservation through WWF's Asian Rhino, Elephant Sumateran through Elephant Action Strategy (AREAS), Sumateran Stripped Rabbit, and Sumateran Tiger identified by IUCN, WCS, and WWF that Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is the most important forest area for the conversation of tigers in the world called as "Tiger Conversation Unit 1". There are also many endemic fauna inhibit in this region, such as honey bears, tapirs, ungko, siamang, simpai, kancil, and sea turtles.

Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park has over 10,000 plant species, 200 mammals, and 22 of those are not found elsewhere in indonesia, 15 of which are only found in Indonesia. The most exotic Giant Carrion Flowers or Titan Arum (Amorphophallus Titanum) and the tall Carrion Flowers (Amorphophallus decus-silvae) are the largest flowers existing on the earth, and only can be found in South East Asia, especially in Indonesia. The place to find and observe the tall Carrion Flowers is in Sukaraja Atas (Upper Sukaraja). there are also the largest orchid locally known as Anggrek Tebu or Sugarcane Orchid (Grammatophyllum speciosum), and many more you can find here.

If you are in Bukit Barisan, do not forget to visit these spots: Tampang, Blubuk, Menjukut Lake, Way Sleman, Blimbing to experience the true adventure of being in a real tropical forest by camping, river cruising, swimming, canoeing, jungle trekking, even doing some marine activities, or just want to enjoy relaxing thermal springs in Suwoh, see enchanting waterfalls in Kubu Perahu while exploring the forest.

The main entry to get to the Bukit Barisan National Park is from the town of Bandar Lampung, capital of Lampung Province. You can take a flight to get to Radin Inten II Airport at Bandar Lampung, then take a bus from the Rajabasa Terminal to Kota Agung (usually it takes about 2 hours). Get a permit at The Forest Protection and Natural Conservation (PHPA) office, once you arrive in Kota Agung. Go straight to Bukit Barisan National Park entrance at Tampang by using a boat that provided in the Harbor. Either way, if you want to go to Sedaya take a minubus headed to Sedaya, or go to Suwoh from Sedaya by taking motorbike taxies, alternatively take motorbike taxies from Sedaya to Sukaraja Atas.
