Berastagi or Karo Highland, a small town located in the highland of
North Sumatera Island, and only 3 hours away from Medan city with an elevation of 1200 meters. It is also close to
Lake Toba. The air of this place is very fresh and clean because it is surrounded by mountains and forests. The main tourism in this region are the highland nature, beautiful lake and river, sight view, megalitic art, and the culture attraction. You can also go rafting to Bukit Lawang, or playing golf (usually provided by some resort). Such a perfect spot for day trips to a variety places.

Berastagi is located near two semi-active volcanoes that are
Gunung (Mount) Sinabung and
Gunung Sibayak. Hiking Gunung Sinabung and Sibayak on the
Karo Highlands are two key attractions in the vicinity, besides traditional Karo Villages and waterfalls. Gunung Sibayak is a very popular mount to climb/trek. It takes only 10 minutes walking to begin the trail from northwest of town, can be accomplished within 3 hours to get to the summit without a guide, it offers you a spectaculer view of the Karo Highlands. After a long way, you can enjoy the hot spring or pools for therapeutic bathing in Semangat Gunung located at the base of volcano. Such a relaxing way to end of a long trekking.

Unlike neighboring Gunung Sibayak, Gunung Sinabung requires a knowledgeable guide to trek. It is regarded as a very challenging volcano to climb, requires good physical srength, balance and endurance to climb. There is only one route to get to the summit, the path starts at Lake Kawar to the North of Volcano. Right next to the centre of Berastagi is Bukit Gundaling which is a hill overlooking Berastagi, Gunung Sibayak and Gunung Sinabung. At the top of the hill are some food and coffee stalls with excellent views over the town. There are also horse riding available up and down the hill.

Twelve kilometers from South of Berastagi is
Kabanjahe, in which you can walk 4 kilometerms to the
primitive, ancient, traditional village of Lingga where the design of the houses are long with horned roofs which is distinctive of Sumateran tribes and has remained unchanged for centuries. Tours to Lingga village will usually be offered wherever you stay in Berastagi. You can take bemos to get to it more cheaply. You should pass making a village visit if you are going to Lake Toba.

However this town is so small, but many objects to visit, such as seeing the
traditional Karo Batak architecture along the road, Hiking the mountains, you can also visit the
beautiful Sipiso-piso waterfall. It offers you to view Lake Toba from the West Coast, a splender stream of water falling from a great height in Karo Highlands, you will be amazed by the view of Lake Toba from the top. Either way, have a visit to Simarjarunjung to relax and enjoy the remarkable view of the nature.

The wide main street of the town is filled with restaurants and hotels, souvenir shops, and the central market. You can buy souvenirs such as
Batak Ulos-hand made
woven cloth, hand-printed batik, rattan plaitwork, carvings, and many more. A lovely tourist town that located in the Karo highlands is known for its plantations and various kinds of flowers, vegetables, fruits. The most famous of which is the "
Marquisa"-passion fruit. Passion fruit of Brastagi is very popular until the whole of Indonesia, and many made quintessence syrup. Berastagi which is rich with argo-industries became the appropriate choice for recreation spot other than another place like Lake Toba, Samosir Island, that has long become the trademark of The North Sumatera.

You cam also visit the Sibolangit Botanical gardens, that are on the road between Medan and Berastagi, about 20km north of Berstagi. An attractive piece of untouched rainforest with giant ferns and trees covered in moss. Botanics can enjoy the interesting diversity of local fauna, and bird watchers also have enough to see here.
Getting to Berastagi, there are only two routes. You can either take the public transportation or a taxi from Medan. Another route will take 4-6 hours, with the trip from Danau Toba running up to see some truly spectacular highland terrain. The bus and mini-bus options are the cheapest, with the mini-bus route from Danau Toba is just as crammed as any public transportation or bemo. Taxis are much more expensive, but if you are going to take it, just make sure the car is for you, and not shared with anyone else. It is common thing to cram as many people as possible into a share-taxi. But if you are going to rent a car, you might as well go all the way.
Note : Free maps and trekking advice can be had at the tourist information center located in the north of the town on Jalan Gundaling. Closed Sundays, the office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
