Tanjung Puting National Park is located in the peninsula on the south coast of the world's third largest tropical rain forest of Borneo, two regions, in Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and is known for home to an amazing array wildlife including its world famous orangutans and its pristine vegetation of the jungle. Because the vegetation of Tanjung Puting supports a large population, and became one of the most important National Park in Southeast Asia for preservation of primates, reptiles, birds, fishes, and many wetlands species.

Tanjung Puting National Park was originally declared as a game reserve in 1936 and 1937 but then it was upgraded to a National Park in 1982. There is also a rehabilitation centre provide you with excellent family-friendly facilities and you’ll likely see a diversity of wildlife ranging from sun bears and pythons to wild boars and leopards as you trek across the park. Tanjung Puting National Park is as large as Bali, that has several ecosystems such as tropical rain forest, low plain, fresh-water swamp forest, dry land forest, beach forest, mangrove forest and secondary forest. The park sits on a peninsula that is out into the Java sea with an elevation of 0-100 metres above sea level. The peninsula is low lying and swampy with a spine of dry ground which rises a few feet from the omnipresent swamp.
Tanjung Puting National Park
To reach the Tanjung Puting National Park, take a flight to the Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun (Central Kalimantan) from Jakarta or other main Indonesian cities. From Pangkalan Bun (the capital of Kotawaringin district) you can head to Kumai which is 9 km away by public transportation taking 20 minutes. From there you can continue to Tanjung Puting National Park using traditional boat, called as 'klotok' for about 2 hours. Speed boats are also available, cutting the journey to one hour but better take the slowboat if you are not in a hurry as it is a beautiful ride to see the natural wonders of the world.
