Tangkuban Perahu is dormant volcano with an elevation of 2,084 m above sea level, located about 30 km north of
Bandung city. More precisely in between
Sagalaherang district,
Subang regency and
Lembang district, Bandung regency. It has such a unique shape, distinctly looks like an "overturned boat", and this is the philosophy why the volcano is called
Tangkuban Perahu (
Sundanese language). This largest mountain plateau
Parahyangan has a cold air and hot springs at the foot of mountain. You can also find cool air, tea plantations, tall pines and valleys on your journey toward the entry of Tangkuban Perahu.

The volcano has many sites to see and explore, you can walk around or explore the crater filled with sulfur, hike through the forest on its slopes, or simply enjoy the scenery. Geologically, Tangkuban Perahu has a significant role in the development of Parahyangan highlands. The cause of eruptions have contributed immensely to the hills through lava flowing into the valleys and hardening into the rock, thus forming big cliffs over which the waterfalls leap.

There are three famous craters (
kawah) in Tangkuban Perahu to allow tourist to walk through. The first is Kawah Ratu, the ground around the crater is generally white with yellow sulfur stones, there are also some shops you can find in the area which offer a variety of souvenirs and accessories, hot drinks and food or even ride a horse. Second is Kawah Upas, located near
Kawah Ratu but to see this crater you must go through dangerous terrain, pass through the sandy road. The last one is
Kawah Domas, located further down than
Kawah Putih. You will find the gateway to Kawah Domas first before heading to Kawah Ratu.

However, to reach the finest viewpoint, continue straight along the flat top of the mountain, you soon reach a lovely viewpoint on the very edge of the crater at the far side of Kawah Upas. It is known as the best place to sit down and admire the scenery from the top, from here there is a small trail down to the west (if you are doing a clockwise circuit) which leads all the way to the tea plantation and Situ Lembang lake valley. From the hike to Tangkuban Perahu from the western side, there is a tea plantation and a river that can be impassable. Have a visit to the tea factory and see the tea-making process in action plus try a cup of what would otherwise have been sold as
Lipton's Tea.
