Jakarta is the largest and the capital city of Indonesia, located on the northwest coast of the Java Island. Jakarta is the centre of activities for the whole of Indonesia such as economic, cultural and political. The city is known as the most populous city in Southeast Asia. Jakarta has been the main gateway to Indonesia, the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport serves a growing number of international and domestics flights. It also has become as a city of many fascinating facets, a rich cultural life with abundance of performing arts, courteous persona, and many more. The city has carefully preserved its rich cultural heritage apart from the skyscrapers, colonial structures built by European powers. The ethnic Jakartan is called "Orang Betawi" - Betawi people, speak Betawi Malay. In the recent years, younger generation speaks the modern Jakarta Malay.

Jakarta provides visitors with multi-star luxury hotels, exciting nightlife, fine restaurants, and modern shopping centre. You can find cheap food in Jakarta and is available in great variety. Jakarta's climate is a high average humidity, there is no much difference in the day or night. Jakarta's nickname by the expats is the Big Durian, mean its a shock at first sight and smell. The evolution of Indonesia character is traced in many of Jakarta's museums. The museums exhibit the development of Jakarta from the time of Dutch rule and Indonesian people struggle for the independence.

There is also an extensive park set in over 100 hectares, the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature) is a place where you can see the magnificent archipelago in just one day. All the Islands are realistically reproduced in miniatures, around the lake are pavilions to represent all the provinces of Indonesia. Each pavilion represents its traditional architectural style in miniature to a wonderful display. You can enjoy it by taking the cable car and horse drawn cart or the tram. There are also beautiful Orchid Garden, Zoological Museum, Bird Park. Other place to visit is Dunia Fantasy in Ancol, the miniature Disneyland, and many amusement parks.

Being two centuries old, National Museum of Indonesia (Museum Nasional) has been the icon and one of the finest museum in Southeast Asia. It is located in centre of Jakarta, at Jalan Medan Merdeka. It is known as an archeological, geographical, historical, ethnological museum.

There is also best known landmark which is also the symbol of Jakarta city named National Monument (Monas), located at Lapangan Merdeka. The 433 ft height with a gold plated flame on top of it symbolizing the fight for Indonesia’s independence. With the lift inside the tower, visitors can go to the top and enjoy scenery of Jakarta city from a platform. You can go to down to basement and observe the milestones of the nation’s historical journey. The biggest mosque in Southeast Asia with a capacity of more than 120,000 people also located in Jakarta.

The place to go for a taste of Jakarta’s history by visiting Kota Tua - “the Old Town” known as Old Batavia, is centred around Fatahillah Square. You may see old buildings influenced by European and Chinesse architecture. When you visit Kota Tua, do not miss out to bike ride with ojek sepeda onthel.

A kilometre north of Taman Fatahillah, the old port of Sunda Kelapa is full of magnificient Makassar schooners. Jakarta has plenty of places to visit besides all above that mentioned, Museum Bahari near the entrance to Sunda Kelapa can be an alternative place, it was old VOC warehouses (dating back to 1652), and a good place to learn about the city’s maritime history. Visiting Museum Wayang, this puppet museum has the best collections of wayang puppets of Java. The collection includes puppets not only from Indonesia but also China, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, Europe, and the masks used by the dancers. You can see wayang performances on Sunday at 10 am for free.
