East Kalimantan is the largest province of
Kalimantan Island that covers an area of 211.440 km2 and has several large rivers. One of the largest rivers in Indonesia is Mahakam River with 149.277 km2 water surface area and a length of up to 950 km, flows from its upper stream in West Kutai to its lower stream in
Kutai Kartanegara and
Samarinda. It includes several lakes, tributaries and fascinates with its Amazonian like scenery.

Get to Mahakam River, you need to go to the city of Samarinda first. The airport of Samarinda serves only regional flights within Kalimantan, Therefore you have to go to Balikpapan (it is connected within Indonesia). From Balikpapan you can either take a flight or bus.
